MID ECM CID 0168 FMI 02Conditions Which Generate This Code:The system voltage is intermittent. The following conditions are present: the engine is running and the battery voltage drops below 9.0 VDC for at least 0.06 seconds and recovers, or the battery voltage falls below 9.0 VDC for three times in the previous 7 seconds.Note: The diagnostic code is logged into memory. The diagnostic code may be viewed on Cat ET. Rapidly turning the keyswitch OFF and then back to the ON position can cause this code to be logged.
Illustration 1 g03325937Troubleshooting:The battery connections for the MSCS enter the marine junction box on the 5/16 inch terminal posts that are located on the bottom of the marine junction box . The battery voltage is then routed through the appropriate circuit protection. The battery voltage then goes to the PCP keyswitch panel displays and to the ECM unswitched battery connections. The circuit breaker for ECM (port side) and the circuit breaker for the ECM (starboard side) are associated with the battery supply to the ECM. The keyswitch for the ECM is routed from the keyswitch on the keyswitch panel through the connector that is labeled "KEY/ALARM" (key alarm) into the marine junction box. The keyswitch then goes through the marine junction box to the connector labeled "ECM", and then out to the J3/P3 connector.All troubleshooting for a battery supply problem should begin with a check of the following items: circuit breakers, batteries, battery connections and marine junction box.Test Step 1. CHECK THE WIRING AND CONNECTORS.
Turn the keyswitch OFF.
Inspect the J1/P1 ECM connector, the J3/P3 customer connector, and the battery terminals on the "marine junction box" ("MJB").
Ensure that all circuit breakers on the MJB are not tripped. If a circuit breaker is tripped, reset the circuit breaker.
Perform a 45 N (10.11 lb) pull test on each wire that is associated with the battery supply to the ECM. Refer to Illustration 2and Table 5.
Check the Allen screw on the ECM connectors for the proper torque. The proper torque is 2.25 N m (19.9141 lb in).
Check the Allen screw and connectors on the PCP for the proper torque and attachment.
Inspect the harnesses from the ECM to the marine junction box and from the marine junction box to the battery connections for the following conditions:
Corrosion
Abrasion
Pinch points
Incorrect attachmentExpected Result:None of the circuit breakers on the "MJB" are tripped. The connections are secure.Results:
OK - None of the circuit breakers on the "MJB" are tripped. The connections are secure. Go to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - A circuit breaker on the "MJB" is tripped or a connection is not secure.Repair: Reset the circuit breaker or repair the connection.Re-check the wiring, connectors, and circuit breakers to ensure that the circuit breakers on the MJB are not tripped and to ensure that the connections are secure.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE BATTERY VOLTAGE AT THE BATTERIES.Measure the battery voltage at the batteries.Expected Result:The voltage is between 22 VDC and 27 VDC for a 24 VDC system. The voltage is between
