Direct Injection
1. Fasten the seat belt. 2. Move the transmission selector lever (1) to NEUTRAL. Apply the parking brake (2).When starting the engine, be sure the transmission selector is in NEUTRAL. However, it is possible to start the engine when the transmission lever is in other than NEUTRAL. Should this happen, move the lever to NEUTRAL for a few seconds, then to desired gear position and direction. 3. Observe the body down indicator. The body should be down and the hoist control in FLOAT position. For trailing unit machines, the dump doors should be closed and the door control in HOLD position. 4. Turn the disconnect switch on. 5. Observe the supplemental steering indicator. If the indicator is on for longer than the three seconds test cycle, move the switch to AUTO. 6. Depress the accelerator. 7. Turn the start switch to START. Release the switch when the engine starts.Below 0°C (32°F)
1. Follow steps 1 through 6 for "Above 0°C (32°F)."2. Turn the start switch to START. 3. After cranking begins, push the ether starting aid control switch and hold for three seconds (time is required to fill chamber). Ether is injected when aid switch is released. Use additional starting fluid about every two seconds until the engine is running smoothly.
Do not use excessive starting fluid during starting or after the engine is running. After every 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow 2 minutes for the starter motor to cool.Turn the disconnect switch off after the engine is stopped, to prevent battery discharge.
For starting below -18°C (0°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer or refer to the "Cold Weather Operation Guide," Form SEBU5898, available from your Caterpillar dealer.Precombustion Engine - 776 - 777
Perform steps 1 through 6 from the section, "Starting the Engine." 1. Move the glow plug switch to HEAT.See the Starting Aid Chart below for the time required. 2. Turn the start switch to START. Release the switch when the engine starts.3. If the engine does not start after 10 seconds, release the start switch, move the glow plug switch to HEAT for 30 seconds. Turn start switch. 4. When the engine starts, it may be necessary to return the switch to HEAT until the engine runs smoothly. Move the switch to OFF.
If the engine does not start after the first attempt, let the starter cool for two minutes then repeat the starting procedure.Do not turn the disconnect switch to OFF when the engine is running.
5. Do not move the heat switch to HEAT when the engine is warm and running.Starting with an External Air Supply
Do not exceed 1035 kPa (150 psi).
Before charging the air start tank from an external air supply, drain the water from the external air supply system. 1. Remove the coupling cover. Connect the auxiliary air supply hose to fittings. Turn valve to open air lines.2. After the engine starts, remove the supply hose and install the cover. Close the valve.Starting From an External Source
Always wear eye protection.Do not smoke or use any equipment which
