MODELS INVOLVED - 950H, 962H AND IT62H WHEEL LOADERS
Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
The coupling between the steering pump and hydraulic pump needs to be inspected and possibly reworked on the products listed below. The existing coupling can fail as result of a missing retaining ring. A failure of the coupling could potentially cause complete loss of steering function which may, in conjunction with other factors or circumstances, result in a risk of personal injury or death. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 07Jun2011 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure
INSPECTION/REWORK PROCEDURE
Refer to RENR8881,Disassembly and Assembly Manual, for all removal, disassembly, assembly and installation procedures.
REMOVE CAB
1) Remove the cab. Refer to RENR8881, Disassembly and Assembly, "Cab - Remove".
STEERING PUMP REMOVAL
1. Remove the 241-9299 Main Steering Pump from the affected machine. Refer to RENR8881, Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Pump (Steering) - Remove".
2. Remove the 246-2887 Coupling Assembly. Refer to Image1.2.1.

INSPECTION OF THE COUPLING RETAINER RING
Refer to Images1.2.1 and 1.3.1 for details.
1. Check the inner bore of the 246-2887 Coupling Assembly.
2. The 8C-3312 Retaining Ring should be visible. Refer to Image1.3.1.

INSTALL A RETAINING RING IF NEEDED
1. If the coupling was found to not have a retaining ring, install an 8C-3312 Retaining Ring into the splined bore of the coupling.
STEERING PUMP INSTALLATION
1. Install the 241-9299 Main Steering Pump to the affected machine. Refer to RENR8881, Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Pump (Steering) - Installation". Fill pump case with hydraulic fluid during installation of the pump.
2. Install the cab. Refer to RENR8881, Disassembly and Assembly, "Cab - Install".
3. Check the hydraulic fluid levels.
4. After starting the machine, operate all hydraulic functions, especially the steering function, before releasing the machine to the customer.
