Information:
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot an occurrence for a start inhibit or a stop request from the driven equipment or use this procedure if one of the following event codes is active. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Event Codes" for information about event codes. You must access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes. For information on the engine monitoring system, refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring System".
Table 1
Event Code
Description Conditions which Activate the Code System Response
E226(3) Driven Equipment Start Inhibit The Electronic Control Module (ECM) has received a signal which indicates that the driven equipment is not ready for the engine to start. The code is logged.
The shutdown output is activated.
Engine cranking is prevented.
E270(3) Driven Equipment Shutdown Requested While the engine is running, the ECM has received a signal which indicates that the driven equipment must be shut down. The code is logged.
The shutdown output is activated.
The engine is shut down. Probable Causes
Request from the driven equipment
Faulty circuit for the driven equipmentRecommended Actions
Request from the Driven Equipment
Determine whether the driven equipment has generated a request for the start inhibit or for the shutdown. Determine the cause for the request. Service the driven equipment according to the recommendations of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of the equipment.Faulty Circuit for the Driven Equipment
Note: The circuit for the driven equipment input must remain closed in order for the engine to run.Inspect the wiring of the circuit and the P1 connector for the ECM. Look for damage and/or corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to inspecting electrical connectors.Perform the following procedure to check the circuits for the driven equipment:
Disconnect the P1 ECM connector.
Fabricate a jumper wire that is long enough to create a test circuit across the harness connector for the switch that is at the driven equipment.
Create a continuous circuit by using the jumper wire to short circuit the terminals at the harness connector for the switch.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance between terminals P1-21 and P1-31 at the connector for the ECM. Continuity must be measured for the circuit in order for the ECM to detect normal engine operation.
If the circuit does not have continuity, locate the source of the excessive resistance in the circuit. Perform the necessary repairs.
