This machine is equipped with an air inlet heater (AIH) for cold weather starting. Do not use aerosol can types of starting aids such as ether. Such use could result in an explosion and personal injury.
Turn engine start switch (4) to the ON position. Indicator light (5) will come on during preheating.
When indicator (5) goes out, turn engine start switch (4) to the START position in order to start the engine.Note: If the ambient temperature is above 13 °C (55 °F), the system will not preheat and the postheat cycle will not begin after the engine starts. In addition, the engine can be started even though indicator (5) has not turned off.
If the start switch key is turned to the OFF position before attempting to start the engine, or if the engine does not start, allow the air inlet heater element to cool for one minute before attempting to start the engine again. Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking the engine again.
The postheat cycle begins when the engine starts. This will aid in smoothing a rough idling engine or clearing up white smoke.
Release the engine start switch key after the engine starts.Engine Starting with Ether Starting Aid (If Equipped)
A factory installed ether system is acceptable for use with the air inlet heater. Do not spray ether into the inlet manifold. Explosion can occur causing personal injury or death.
Follow Step 1 through Step 7 of the Engine Starting procedure.Note: If the ambient temperature is above 13 °C (55 °F), the system will not preheat and the postheat cycle will not begin after the engine starts. In addition, the engine can be started even though indicator (5) has not turned off.
When indicator (5) goes out, turn engine start switch (4) to the START position. If the temperature is below-4 °C (24.8 °F), a metered amount of ether will be injected into the intake manifold.
Release the engine start switch key after the engine starts. For starting the engine below -18 °C (0 °F), the use of one of the following cold weather starting aids is recommended:
Coolant heater
Jacket water heaterReference: At temperatures below -23 °C (-10 °F), consult your Caterpillar dealer for additional information or refer to Special Publication, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations".
