Reference: Abbreviations and Symbols Used in the Numerical Parts Record, SEBP1067-05. The Numerical Parts Record helps to correctly identify parts and determine their usage. Column Three of the NPR (titled "Service Part Number") notes special literature references that are available on the part that is listed. This article is to help ensure that you always "search" the NPR for the latest part number and that you make use of the literature references that are listed in Column Three. A review of these reference publications will provide important information about the servicing of that part number.
These literature references are only listed with "KEY" part numbers. A key part number is: ... The part that is most likely to be ordered to accomplish a repair.... The part that is the new part number when a part is canceled and replaced by another.... Not a miscellaneous (minor) part. For example: hardware, gaskets, and O-rings are not key parts.
When a part has been replaced in one application, but is not canceled, it therefore continues to be used in other applications. In these situations, both the new and former parts will be referenced in Column Three.
The publications that are referenced in Column Three include: Service Magazine, Engine News, Truck Engine News, Lift Truck Technical Bulletin, Service Letter, Guideline for Reusable Parts, Special Instruction, Technical Partsgram, Product Letter and Product Bulletin. (Technical Partsgram, Product Letter and Product Bulletin are no longer published, but references still exist in the NPR.) As new information is published, it will be referenced in future updates of the NPR. See the REFERENCE for an explanation of the coding system that is used to identify the various publications in the NPR.
Column Three of the NPR gives the same information whether it is viewed on microfiche or on the Dealer Terminal System (U.S. and Canadian dealers).Before ordering any part number, check the NPR to see that the part number is the most up-to-date and to find out if there is any additional information on the part. Some part numbers may have more than one reference.
For example: You need a 2V6585 Hub and a 2V6716 Gear. When you check the NPR, it indicates what is shown in Chart A for 2V6585 Hub. Chart B shows the information for 2V6716 Gear.
Neither part is serviced, so you go to Column Three to find out what the service replacement is. You then look up these replacements to see if there is any additional information. See Charts C and D.
Column Three confirms that 3V7365 and 3V5918 are good numbers. But before doing anything else, look up the referenced Service Magazine article in the June 14, 1976 issue. This article gives the adaptable serial numbers and some special installation information. You can now CONFIDENTLY order 3V7365 to replace 2V6585 and 3V5918 to replace 2V6716.
Follow this basic method of "tracking" for part numbers whenever you use the NPR.
