New Glass Gluing Procedures
Process must be completed in less than 72 hours or chemicals will become inert.Repair personnel have an option of choosing two bonding kits with either a 15-hour (112-3952 Bonding Slow Kit) or a one-hour (112-3953 Bonding Speedy) curing time. The one-hour kit does require special Betagun® tool to apply the bicomponent sealant (sources for tool are at end of text).
Sheet Metal Preparation
1. When removing glass with cutter, leave behind an even 0.5 to 1.0 mm (.02 to .04 in) thickness of old glue (mastic) on the metal to improve adhesion of the new glue.2. Before applying the body primer (red cap), the primer must be mixed by shaking the primer bottle for one minute.3. Apply a thin 25 mm (1.0 in) wide strip of the primer on the outer edge of the mastic coating remaining on the sheet metal..4. Let dry 15 minutes.Glass Preparation
If the existing window will be glued back in position, remove all of the remaining black primer and sealant with razor blade. Inspect the new window for cleanliness.
Cleaned surfaces must not be touched by fingers or other matter.
Avoid prolonged skin contact with heptane and trichlorethylene. Avoid breathing the vapors in enclosed areas without adequate ventilation. Avoid inhaling the vapors through a lit cigarette or other smoking materials. Do not use near open flame or welding operations or other heated surfaces exceeding 482°C (900°F).
1. Wipe glass edge, approximately 30 mm (1.18 in) wide, with a rag soaked in heptane.2. Wipe dry.3. Clean the 30 mm (1.2 in) wide edge with the glass wipe (yellow cap).4. Wipe dry.Primer Application
1. Apply primer (green cap) immediately after cleaning. Make sure to shake bottle for one minute before application.2. Apply primer in a 25 mm (1.0 in) wide strip around the outer edge of glass.3. Let dry for at least 15 minutes.If the primer gets on other areas of glass, remove the primer with trichlorethylene, not the wipe supplied with kit.
Sealant Application & Assembly
"Bonding Slow Kit"
1. With "Bonding Slow Kit," drying time depends on temperature and humidity. For best results apply sealant with surrounding temperature between 20 to 40 °C (68 to 104 °F).2. Apply a 12 mm (0.5 in) triangle-shaped bead of sealant at 12 mm (0.5 in) from edge of glass.3. Press and hold glass against frame for 15 hours."Bonding Speedy Kit"
1. With bicomponent "Bonding Speedy," install components in Betagun® tool making sure sealant cylinder (red container) is on left side.2. Apply 12 mm (0.5 in) wide triangular sealant bead 12 mm (0.5 in) from glass edge. 3. Press and hold against frame for 1 hour. Betagun® is not available through the Parts Distribution System.
