Check/Adjust
Initial valve lash adjustment for new or rebuilt engines only, is recommended at the Initial 92 Day FRA Inspection. This is due to the initial wear and seating of valve train components.The next adjustment should be made at the 184 Day FRA Inspection interval. If unchanged after the 184 Day FRA Inspection interval, make subsequent adjustments at Every Year interval thereafter.If adjustment was necessary at the 184 Day FRA Inspection interval, make subsequent adjustments at Every 184 Day FRA Inspection interval thereafter. When the valve lash (clearance) is checked, an adjustment is NOT necessary if the measurement is within 0.08 mm ( 0.003 in.) of the value given in the chart. Before adjusting valve lash, a bridge adjustment must be made. Be sure to adjust the valve bridges first. See "Valve Bridge Adjustment" in the Every 184 Day FRA Inspection interval for the procedure.If the measurement is outside of the range given for valve clearance check, an adjustment is necessary. Set the clearance to the nominal clearance given in the "Valve Clearance Setting" chart. Valve Clearance is measured between the rocker arm and the bridge for the valves. Adjust the valve clearance to the value specified in the chart. Observe Rotation of Valves With Engine Idling After Setting the Valve Clearances
When inspecting the valve rotators, protective glasses or face shield and protective clothing must be worn, to prevent being burned by hot oil spray.
After setting all valve clearances and before installing the valve cover:1. Start the engine.2. Move the throttle control to notch 1 (LOW IDLE) position. 3. Watch the top surface on each valve rotator. Each valve rotator should turn slightly each time the valve closes. If a valve fails to rotate, contact your Caterpillar dealer. Caterpillar recommends replacement of improperly operating valve rotators. An improperly operating valve rotator will shorten valve life through accelerated valve face and valve seat wear.If a damaged rotator is not replaced, valve face guttering could result. Metal particles of the valve could fall into the cylinder and cause piston and cylinder head damage.
