247-14     SAE J1939 Data Link : Special Instruction     The data received from the CAN data bus is not in the correct format.
The code is logged.    The diagnostic code for the special instruction is logged in order to report the configuration status of the data link. The diagnostic code for the special instruction does not check the physical condition of the data link.
The personality module code is incorrect.
The configuration of the parameter is invalid.
There is an incorrect module or display on the data link.
The data link wiring is damaged.

Troubleshooting Test Steps    Values    Results    
1. Check for an Associated 247-9 Diagnostic Code
A. Establish communication between the electronic service tool and the Electronic Control Module (ECM) for the engine.
B. Check for a 247-9 code.
   
Associated code
   
Result: A 247-9 code is logged.
Repair the 247-9 code before continuing with this procedure. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Data Link Circuit - Test".
If an XXXX-14 code is still present after resolving the 247-9 code, proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: A 247-9 code is not logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
   
2. Check the Flash File for the Engine ECM
A. Connect the electronic service tool and select the engine ECM.
B. Check that the latest flash file is installed in the engine ECM.

Result: The latest flash file is installed.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The latest flash file is not installed.
Install the latest version of the correct flash file into the engine ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Flash Programming".
Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes and then check that the fault has been eliminated.
   
3. Check the Configuration Parameters in the Engine ECM
A. Check that the correct configuration parameters are programmed into the engine ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Programming Parameters" section.

Result: The configuration parameters are not programmed correctly.
Program the parameters to function with the other modules on the data link.
Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes and then check that the fault has been eliminated.
Result: The configuration parameters are programmed correctly.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
   
4. Check for Compatibility with Other Modules on the Data Link
A. Determine if all other modules on the data link are compatible with the engine ECM.

Result: Another module is not compatible.
Install a module that is compatible with the engine ECM.
Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes and confirm that the fault has been eliminated .
If the fault is still present, contact the Technical Communicator at a Cat dealer.
