Left Side ViewThe function of the air compressor is to provide and maintain air under pressure to operate devices in the air brake and/or auxiliary air systems.The Tu-Flo 1400 Air Compressor is a four cylinder in-line, single stage, reciprocating air compressor with a rated displacement of 31 cubic feet of air per minute at 1250 rpm. The Tu-Flo 1400 Air Compressor is a special purpose air compressor intended for applications where high air usage is required; such as in bulk trailer loading.The air compressor assembly is comprised of three cast iron subassemblies; the cylinder head, the cylinder block and the crankcase.The cylinder head houses the discharge valving and is installed to the cylinder block. The cylinder block houses the cylinder bores and inlet valves and is installed to the crankcase. The crankcase houses the crankshaft and main bearings.The TU-Flo 1400 Air Compressor is available in various mounting and drive configurations as required by engine designs. Two governor mounting pads are provided on the cylinder block.The cylinder head and cylinder block are cooled by coolant routed to the air compressor from the engine cooling system.Lubrication for the internal parts of the Tu-Flo 1400 Air Compressor is provided by the engine's pressurized oil system.

Description
The Inlet Regulating Valve or IRV is intended for use on multi-cylinder air compressors which receive their induction air supply from the pressure side of the engine turbocharger. Generally mounted directly at the air compressor inlet, the IRV is designed to regulate air compressor inlet pressure to 69 kPa (10 psi) or less. The cast aluminum body incorporates an outlet flange which is capable of mating most Bendix Air Compressors. A 3/4 inch female pipe thread in the IRV cap facilities connection to the engine induction system or turbocharger. High temperature O-rings, seals, seats, and lubricant are used throughout the IRV to provide compatibility with incoming turbocharger air temperatures up to 121°C (250°F). The valve and piston assembly consists of the piston housing, two O-rings and control piston with its permanently affixed valve plate. The cavity below the piston is vented to atmosphere. The ring spacer holds the piston housing in place and rest on the supply cap nut along with the valve spring. The steel cap nut contains the supply port and retains an O-ring which serves as the valve seat. The hex socket plug with a spring and steel ball comprise the relief valve.Air Compressor Operation
The air compressor is driven by the vehicle engine and is operating continuously while the engine is running. Actual compression of air is controlled by the air compressor unloading mechanism and the governor. The governor which is generally mounted on the air compressor maintains the brake system air pressure to a preset maximum and minimum pressure level.Inlet And Compression Of Air (Loaded)
