Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Before any tests are performed, visually inspect the complete steering system for oil leaks and damaged parts. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Visual Inspection". Before any tests are performed, prepare the machine for troubleshooting. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting".Steering Pressure Test

The relief valve limits the maximum steering system pressure.Ensure that the hydraulic oil is warm. Refer to Systems Operation, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting" for further information.
Move the machine to a smooth, horizontal location. Move the machine away from other operating machines and away from personnel.
Lower the work tool to the ground. Stop the engine.

Remove the dust cap from the test fitting (2) on accumulator charging valve (1). Connect tooling (A) to test fitting (2) .Note: The accumulator charging valve is mounted to the frame in the right side of the engine compartment.
Connect tooling (B) to tooling (A) .
Start the engine. Raise the work tool slightly.
Run the engine at high idle.Note: During the following step, do not keep the main pump at stall condition for more than 10 seconds. If necessary, release the steering wheel and wait for 30 seconds before you repeat the step.
Turn the steering wheel against the steering stop. Continue to turn the steering wheel against the steering stop until the relief valve opens.
Record the pressure reading on the gauge. The pressure should be 17500 500 kPa (2538 73 psi).
Release the steering wheel. Reduce the engine speed to low idle. Lower the work tool to the ground. Stop the engine.
Engage the parking brake.
Remove the test equipment.
Install the dust cap to test fitting (2) .
