Illustration 1 g01045979Adjustment Procedure (Off Machine)
Place wheel spindle (1) on a support (or floor) with the small end up.
Lubricate the wheel bearings with the lubricant that is being sealed.
Assemble brake group (6), wheel assembly (2), hub (3) and the wheel bearings on wheel spindle (1).
Install bearing plate (5) without shims (7).
Illustration 2 g01045981
Install five bolts (4) evenly spaced, but do not tighten.
Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the top of bearing plate (5) to wheel spindle (1). Measure through three evenly spaced small holes in bearing plate (5). Find the average value of the three measurements. This average is the zero reading.Note: Mark the holes used for the measurements.
Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 90 14 N m (66 10 lb ft).
Turn wheel assembly (2) two to three complete revolutions.
Loosen bolts (4) until bearing plate (5) is loose.
Turn wheel assembly (2) two to three complete revolutions.
Use a depth micrometer again to measure the distance from the top of bearing plate (5) to wheel spindle (1). Measure through the three marked holes in bearing plate (5). Find the average value of the three measurements.
Compare the average measurement from Step 11 to the zero reading from Step 6. If, the difference is 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) or less go to Step 14. If the difference is greater than 0.05 mm (0.002 inch), repeat Steps 7 through 11, then go to Step 13.
If, the measurement found at Step 12 is still greater than 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) disassemble the parts to determine the problem. If the measurement is 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) or less, go to Step 14.
Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 40 7 N m (30 5 lb ft).
Turn the wheel assembly one revolution.
Retighten bolts (4) to a torque of 40 7 N m (30 5 lb ft).
Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the top of bearing plate (5) to wheel spindle (1). Measure through the three marked holes in the bearing plate (5). Calculate the average value of the three measurements.
Remove bolts (4) and bearing plate (5) from wheel spindle (1).
Use an outside micrometer to measure the thickness of bearing plate (5). Make a measurement at each of the three marked holes that were used for the depth measurement. Find the average value of the three measurements.
Subtract the average thickness of retainer (5) found in Step 19 from the value found in Step 17. This difference is the clearance between the end of spindle housing (1) and retainer (5).
Add 0.10 mm (0.004 inch) to the value found in Step 20 to determine the thickness of shims (7) that are required.
Apply Loctite 7649 and then apply Loctite 263 to bolts (4).
Install the required shims (7), bearing plate (5) and bolts (4) to wheel spindle (1).
Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 270 25 N m (200 20 lb ft).
