(4) Speed sensor
(5) Case drain lineThe machine is equipped with four propel motors, one for each side of the front drum and the rear drum. Propel motor (3) on the left side of the rear drum is shown above. Each motor is a single-speed, radial-piston motor.Brake assembly (1) is mounted on each propel motor. When the interlock valve in the propel pump is energized, charge oil is directed from the pump into brake line (2). When this action happens, the parking brakes are released. Each motor is equipped with speed sensor (4). A gear on the output shaft of the motor rotates past the tip of the speed sensor. Each time a tooth passes the sensor, an electrical impulse is generated. The machine ECM converts the frequency of the impulses to a motor speed.

(9) Cam follower
(10) PistonCam ring (7) and control valve (not shown) in the radial-piston motor are stationary. Cylinder block (8) and pistons (10) rotate with output shaft (6). During motor operation, each piston in the motor goes through a four-phase cycle. The phases in the cycle correspond with the cam follower position in relation to the lobes of the cam ring. When cam follower (9) is at the highest point on the cam lobe (relative to the center of the motor), piston (10) is in the top-neutral phase. At this point, the piston chamber is not connected to either an inlet or an outlet port. When the cam follower is on the downhill face of the cam lobe, the piston is in the full-power phase. During this phase, the piston chamber is connected to an inlet port. When the piston is connected to an inlet port, pump supply oil fills the piston chamber. The supply oil forces the piston out of the barrel. This action forces the cam follower to move down the cam lobe. The piston chamber remains connected to the inlet port until the cam follower reaches the lowest point in the valley of the cam ring. At this point, the piston is in the bottom-neutral phase. In this phase, the piston chamber is not connected to an inlet or an outlet port. When the cam follower is on the uphill face of the cam lobe, the piston chamber is open to the return line. At this point, the piston is in the discharge phase. During the discharge phase, the piston moves toward the center of the motor. As the piston retracts into the cylinder block, the oil in the piston chamber flows into the outlet port.
