Conditions Which Generate This Code:The diagnostic circuit of the Transmission ECU identifies a system voltage that is below 9 DCV.The possible causes of this diagnostic trouble code are listed:
The system voltage remains low for an extended time after the engine is started.
There is an open circuit between the battery and the ECU.
There is an open circuit between the ECU and system ground.
The battery is disconnected with the key in the ON position. Also, the engine must not be running.System Response:The machine response is listed:
The functions of the transmission are disabled until the voltage is above 9 DCV and the direction switch is placed in neutral.Note: Ensure that CID 0168 FMI 01 is active and that the diagnostic trouble code indicator is active. Test Step 1. CHECK THE BATTERY VOLTAGE.
Start the engine.
Run the engine at high idle for several minutes.
Measure the battery voltage at the battery posts.Expected Result: The voltage should be greater than 9 DCV.Results:
OK - The voltage is greater than 9 DCV. The battery voltage is correct. Proceed to test step 2.
NOT OK - The voltage is less than 9 DCV. The charging system is not operating correctly. Repair: Check the charging system.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE SYSTEM VOLTAGE AT THE ECU.
Run the engine at high idle.
Locate the connector for the Transmission ECU.
By using a multimeter probe, measure the system voltage between all possible sources of +battery and all possible sources of ground.Expected Result: The voltage should be less than 9 DCV.Results:
OK - Voltage is less than 9 DCV. The harness has failed.Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness.STOP
NOT OK - Voltage is greater than 9 DCV. The system voltage is correct. Repair: Ensure that CID 0168 FMI 01 is active. Disconnect the harness connector from the ECU and inspect contacts for the +battery and ground for corrosion or debris. Reconnect the harness connector to the ECU. If the diagnostic trouble code is active, replace the ECU. Check the circuit again. If the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) is available, use the Cat ET service tool in order to perform a "Wiggle Test" on the machine wiring harness. The "Wiggle Test" can detect shorts and opens in the machine wiring harness that are momentary or intermittent. It is unlikely that the ECU has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the diagnostic trouble code is not found, replace the ECU. Prior to replacing an ECU, always contact your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Unit - Replace".STOP
