Machine Data That is Stored in the VIMSTM Electronic Control Modules
The VIMSTM electronic control modules (ECMs) store the following machine data:
Product identification number (PIN) or serial number
Machine equipment or unit number
Machine hours (SMH)
Odometer
Date
Time
Payload calibration
All data files that can be downloaded
Setting of the display unit
Setting of the desired language
Active eventsNote: See Table 1 for the status of machine information after new onboard software has been flashed into the onboard memory.Note: The active events are stored in memory when the keyswitch is turned off.

( 1 ) The VIMS onboard software (flash file) contains the source software and the configuration software. The Caterpillar Electronic Technician must be used to flash this software.
( 2 ) Installation of the new configuration software or the same configuration software clears the configuration type.The VIMS ECMs continuously monitor the status of the machine systems. The VIMS ECMs decisions are based upon the input from the following components:
Sensors
Switches
Other electronic control modules
Internal calculationsThe VIMS ECMs send information to other ECMs on the machine. The input and output of this information takes place over the Cat® data-link. The outputs of the VIMS ECMs notify the operator and service technician of the machine system status. The machine system information that is provided by the VIMS is shown on the Advisor. The VIMS ECM provides the output for the service indicator lamp.The service indicator lamp is used by the service technician and the on-site maintenance personnel. The service indicator lamp is not visible from the cab. The VIMS ECMs use the two outputs of the RS-232 data link to communicate the onboard data to the off-board systems. The VIMS ECMs have two 70-pin connectors. The connectors are used to connect the necessary harness wiring to all the system components. CatData-Link
The Cat data-link provides a communication link with the other ECMs on the machine. The Cat data- link is bidirectional. The bidirectional functionality allows the input/output of data between ECMs. The Cat data-link permits the sharing of information such as engine oil pressure, machine codes, and diagnostics.
