Caution must be observed when the brake drum is removed to prevent damage to the oil seal.
Install Tool (C) on brake drum (1). Use a suitable lifting device in order to remove the brake drum from the axle housing.

Remove two bolts (14) and the washers in order to remove dust shield (13) .

Use Tool (E) in order to remove retaining spring (16) from brake shoes (15) .
Use Tool (A) in order to remove retaining clip (14) .

Cut lockwire (20) in order to loosen set screw (19) .
Brake shoe (15) and link (18) are removed simultaneously from mounting pin (17) .Note: Two technicians are recommended in order to ensure that the link and the brake shoe are removed simultaneously.

Remove four bolts (22) that secure wheel cylinder (23) to steering knuckle (21). Then remove the wheel cylinder.
Remove twelve bolts (24) that secure oil seal retainer (26) and axle spindle (25) to steering knuckle (21). Then remove the oil seal retainer and the axle spindle.

Remove axle shaft assembly (28) from steering knuckle (21) and axle housing (27) .Note: Ensure that the oil seal is not damaged when the axle shaft assembly is removed.

Remove the cotter pin from castle nut (31). Then remove the castle nut.
Remove bolt (30) in order to disconnect tie rod assembly (29) from the steering knuckle.
Perform Step 17 and Step 18 in order to disconnect the other end of the tie rod assembly.

The upper kingpin cap is shown for clarity.
Remove four bolts (32) that secure upper kingpin cap (33) to the steering knuckle.Remove four bolts that secure the lower kingpin cap to the steering knuckle.
Thread two 0T-0772 Bolts into holes (34). Tighten the bolts in order to remove the lower kingpin cap first. Then remove the upper kingpin cap.Note: Ensure that the shim pack (35) (not shown) remains with the correct kingpin cap. DO NOT MIX SHIM PACKS.

Remove thrust bearing (36) from socket (37) (not shown) for the steering knuckle.
Remove the steering knuckle from the axle housing. The steering knuckle can be tipped to aid in the removal process.

Use Tool (F) in order to remove inner axle oil seal (38) from the axle housing.

Remove fourteen nuts (39) that secure differential carrier assembly (40) to the axle housing.
Remove two bolts (41) from seal flange (42) in order to install Tool (D) to the differential carrier. Use a suitable lift in order to remove the differential carrier from the axle housing.

Mount differential carrier assembly (40) to Tool (G) .
