Personal injury or death can result from improperly adjusting the parking brake due to brake accumulator pressure.Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the parking brake system.
1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location, away from working machines and personnel. Lower the bucket to the ground. Stop the engine.2. Permit only one operator on the machine. Keep all other personnel either away from the machine or in view of the operator.3. Engage the parking brake. Put blocks in front of and behind the wheels.4. Install the steering frame lock link so the machine can not turn.5. Move the hydraulic control levers to all positions to release any pilot/brake pressure in the hydraulic system.6. Operate the brake pedal until pilot/brake pressure has been released from the brake accumulators.7. Carefully loosen the fill cap on the hydraulic tank to release the pressure in the tank.8. Tighten the fill cap on the hydraulic tank.Parking Brake Group Adjustment Procedure
1. Insert a 0.50 mm (.020 in) feeler gauge between parking brake shoe lining (A), and brake drum (5). Rotate star wheel (B) until there is a snug fit using the feeler gauge between the shoe lining and the brake drum.2. With no hydraulic pressure supplied to actuator (1), assemble rod end (6) to actuator shaft (C), to obtain dimension (D). Dimension (D) equals 87.0 mm (3.43 in). Tighten locknut (2) against actuator shaft.3. Pressurize actuator (1) with a minimum of 8760 kPa (1270 psi). This will extend actuator shaft (C).4. Position lever (7) on the splined end of the camshaft to obtain approximate hole alignment for clevis pin (4). Manually rotate lever as necessary and install clevis pin (4) through rod end (6) and lever (7). Secure lever on camshaft with bolt (8).5. Install cotter pin (3) in clevis pin (4).6. Engage the parking brake by releasing the hydraulic oil pressure in the actuator. If the total stroke of actuator exceeds 19.0 mm (.75 in), repeat Steps 1, 3, 4, and 5.7. The secondary/parking brake should provide a minimum machine deceleration rate of 2.45 m/sec (0.25 G) during actual braking of the machine from maximum speed in fourth FORWARD or REVERSE.8. For manufacturing purposes, the secondary/parking brake should be adjusted according to Step 1 through 7. This is to prevent machine movement in second REVERSE range, when the engine is slowly accelerated to full power.
