The force that is needed to turn the steering wheel can indicate if the steering metering pump is operating correctly. Use a torque wrench on the nut for the steering wheel. Check the force that is required to turn the steering wheel.For this check, the engine should be at low idle and the hydraulic oil should be at the normal operating temperature. Turn the steering wheel very slowly and check the force that is required. The correct amount of force should equal 2.8 to 4.0 N m (25.00 to 35.00 lb in) .If excessive force is required to turn the steering wheel, there is probably a restriction in the steering linkage, or dirt contamination in the steering metering pump. If the force that is required to turn the steering wheel is low, there is probably a leak within the steering metering pump.
