Lubricant Recommendations
Cat DEO (Diesel Engine Oil)
Due to significant variations in the quality and in the performance of commercially available oils, Caterpillar makes the following recommendations:
Cat DEO (Diesel Engine Oil) (10W-30)
Cat DEO (Diesel Engine Oil) (15W-40)Note: Cat DEO multigrade exceeds the requirements of the ECF-1 specification. Cat DEO SAE 15W-40 exceeds the performance requirements for the following API categories: API CI-4, API CI-4 PLUS, API CH-4, API CG-4 and API CF. Commercial Oils
Caterpillar does not warrant the quality or performance of non-Caterpillar fluids.
Note: If Cat DEO multigrade is not used, use only commercial oils that meet the following categories and specifications:
Only commercial oils that meet the requirements of Caterpillar's ECF-1 (Engine Crankcase Fluid specification - 1) are acceptable for use in Caterpillar commercial Diesel Engines. API CH-4, API CI-4, and API CI-4 PLUS oils that have not met the requirements of Caterpillar's ECF-1 specification may cause reduced engine life.
API CG-4 multigrade oils are acceptable for all Caterpillar Off-Highway Engines and Caterpillar commercial Diesel Engines. When API CG-4 oils are used, do not exceed the standard oil drain interval. Refer to the engine's Operation and Maintenance Manual for the oil drain interval.Note: Do not use API CF-4 oils in Caterpillar Diesel Engines.Viscosity of Engine Oil
The proper SAE viscosity grade of oil is determined by the minimum ambient temperature during cold engine start-up, and the maximum ambient temperature during engine operation. To determine the oil viscosity that is required for starting a cold soaked engine, refer to the minimum temperature in Table 1. To select the oil viscosity for operation at the highest anticipated ambient temperature, refer to the maximum temperature in the Table. Use the highest oil viscosity that is available in order to meet the required temperature during start-up.

Note: Decrease the interval between oil changes by 20 percent and/or increase the API service classification of the oil for engines that operate at high load factors of 80 percent or more for extended periods of time.
