Information:
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
The hydraulic oil in this system is SAE 10W. If the oil becomes contaminated, premature component failure could result. Contaminated oil can also contribute to overheating. Use the following procedure to sample the oil in the hydraulic system.

Remove the side cover on the earlier models. Open the access door on the newer models.
Start the engine and run the engine at high idle.
Actuate all cylinders through a minimum of ten full cycles.
Lower all attachments to the ground and run the engine at low idle.

Earlier Models (1) Hydraulic oil sampling port. (2) Implement pump.
Illustration 4 g00912079
Newer Models (1) Hydraulic oil sampling port. (3) Case drain filter.
Locate hydraulic oil sampling port (1). The oil sampling port is located near implement pump (2) on the earlier models. The oil sampling port is located on the base of case drain filter (3) on the newer models. The case drain filter is mounted on the hydraulic tank.
Purge hydraulic oil sampling port (1). Insert an 8T-9208 Probe Assembly into hydraulic oil sampling port (1). Note: Use approximately 150 mm (6 inch) length of tube on the end of the probe. Drain approximately 100 mL (4 fl oz) of oil into a container for disposal. This will clean out the sampling port so that a good oil sample may be obtained.
Use a clean tube to draw a 100 mL (4 fl oz) oil sample from the fluid sampling valve. Use an 8T-9190 Fluid Sampling Bottle in order to take the hydraulic oil sample.Reference: Refer to Special Publication, PEHP6001, "How To Take A Good Oil Sample" for information about obtaining an oil sample.
The level of contaminants must be lower than the values in the following table.
Table 1
Hydraulic Oil Contamination
Particle Size (Microns)     Maximum Number of Particles
10 to 20     48000
21 to 50     2580
51 to 100     150
100 or more     20
Stop the engine. Install the cover.
