Connections of the primary steering disable solenoid
This diagnostic code is associated with the primary steering disable solenoid. The FMI 5 means that the ECM has determined that the current for the solenoid circuit is below normal or a circuit is open.The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
The energize circuit of the solenoid is open.
The return circuit of the solenoid is open.
The solenoid has failed.
The ECM has failed. An ECM failure is unlikely.Note: Before performing this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in the circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, that all connections are secure, and that all connections are in good condition. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 2177 - FMI 5 is active before performing this procedure.Note: Use a digital multimeter for the measurements in this procedure.Test Step 1. CHECK THE SOLENOID
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the solenoid from the machine harness.
At the machine harness connector for the solenoid, connect a jumper wire between contact "1" wire (U731-BU(Blue)) and contact "2" wire (F924-OR(Orange)).
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
Observe the status of the FMI 5 diagnostic code.Expected Result:The FMI 5 diagnostic code is no longer active. An FMI 6 diagnostic code is active after the jumper wire is connected.Results:
YES - The FMI 5 diagnostic code is no longer active. An FMI 6 diagnostic code is active after the jumper wire is connected. The solenoid has failed.Repair: The solenoid has failed. Replace the solenoid. Verify that the new solenoid corrects the problem.STOP
NO - The FMI 5 diagnostic code remains active. The jumper wire does not affect the status of the diagnostic code. The solenoid is not causing the problem. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK THE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness connectors from the ECM.
The jumper wire that was installed in the previous test step remains in place.
At the machine harness connector J2 for the ECM, measure the resistance between contact J2-2 wire (U731-BU(Blue)) and contact J2-4 wire (F924-OR(Orange)).Expected Result:The resistance measurement is less than 5 ohms.Results:
YES - The resistance measurement is less than 5 ohms. The circuit is not open in the machine harness. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NO - The resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms. The resistance measurement is not correct. There is an open or a bad connection in the machine harness.Repair: The open connection or the poor connection is in wire (U731-BU(Blue))
