Position the bucket teeth on the reference point. Refer to Illustrations 1 and 2. Note: Be sure to rest the bucket gently on the reference so that the position of the grade stake or hub is not affected.

(1) Benchmark button
Once the bucket is in position, benchmark the system by pressing the benchmark button (1) on the display. Refer to Illustration 3.
Illustration 4 g02386696
(2) Laser-accept soft key Note: This step is optional.
After a benchmark has been established, pass the laser catcher through the laser plane. Press the button corresponding to the laser-accept soft key (2). Refer to Illustration 3. This action will establish a site-wide elevation reference between the laser plane and the original ground elevation reference where the bucket was positioned in Step 2. Once this laser reference is established, the machine can be relocated anywhere on the site within range of the laser transmitter without having to use a ground reference to reset the system benchmark.Note: The laser-accept soft key (2) is only shown after a valid laser signal has been detected and remains visible for 3 seconds.

After establishing the benchmark, the operator can apply a target depth (or elevation offset). While viewing the screen shown in Steps 3 and 4, press the up or down arrows on the display. This action will cause a screen to appear where the operator can use the up or down arrows to dial in a target depth. Refer to Illustration 5.If the target depth is not selected, then use the left or right arrow buttons to select before pressing the up or down buttons. If no buttons are pressed, then after a few seconds, the screen will return to the example shown in Illustration 3. The depth to grade will update to reflect the target depth entered by the operator.Similarly, the operator may enter a target slope. The target slope is entered in the same manner as the target depth.Note: If using the laser option, the laser transmitter must be positioned and configured so that the laser plane generated by the laser transmitter is in the same magnitude and direction as the sloped surface to be excavated. Otherwise, guidance will be incorrect after each time the laser is rereferenced. After establishing the benchmark, referencing the laser and setting any target depth or slope values, the operator is ready to begin excavation. The depth to grade data area and the light bars will indicate to the operator when the operator has achieved the desired grade (the bucket is "on-grade").
After excavating what is necessary within reach of the machine, the operator can relocate the machine to continue excavating. If the operator referenced a laser as described in Step 4, then the laser catcher should be passed through the laser plane and the laser signal accepted before and after the machine has been repositioned. To accept the laser, press the button below the laser-accept soft key (2) as shown in Illustration 4. Referencing the laser again only needs performed on the
