Calibrating the Rotary Speed
The rotary speed or RPM is the rotational speed of the steel in the normal drilling direction. In order to complete the rotary speed calibration, the drill must have a free spinning steel.Note: This analog signal is derived from the tachometer device that is in the cab of the machine. A wire must be connected from the signal terminal of the tachometer on the machine to the "RPM (+) IN" terminal on the terminal strip of the drill system. Also, a wire must be connected from the ground terminal of the tachometer on the machine to the "RPM (-) IN" terminal on the terminal strip of the drill system.Perform the following procedure to calibrate the "RotarySpeed" analog signal:
Determine two physical values within the normal operating range of the drill for the rotary speed. Select a low rotary speed value and a high rotary speed value.Note: The higher rotary speed must be within normal operating range.
Know the maximum height and reach of your machine. Serious injury or death by electrocution can occur if machine or attachments are not kept a safe distance from electrical power lines. Stay back 3 M (10 feet) plus twice the line insulator length.
Be sure all personnel are clear of the equipment while the equipment is being lowered.Failure to stay clear of the equipment while the equipment is being lowered may result in personal injury.
Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine. To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before moving the machine to perform the test that follows.
Attach steel to the drill head. Raise the drill head out of the ground.
Open the calibration menu on the onboard system. Select the analog signal calibration tab.
Select one of the following units from the "Unit System" drop-down menu:
"Metric"
"Imperial"
"Mine"
Highlight "RotarySpeed" from the list.
Press the "Select" button. The calibration input screen will appear.
Select "RPM" in the "Unit Category:" drop-down menu.
Rotate the steel in the normal drilling direction at the low rotary speed that was selected.
Press the "Physical Value:" text field in the "Calibration Point 1" section. The onboard keypad will appear.
Enter the value that was set for the instrument from Step 8.
Increase the rotary speed. Set the RPM gauge to the second higher reading.
Press the "Physical Value:" text field in the "Calibration Point 2" section. The onboard keypad will appear.
Enter the value that was set for the instrument from Step 11.
When both physical values have been entered and a signal value has been received, press the confirmation button. The "Keep new calibration?" confirmation message will appear.
Press the confirmation button to save the calibration. Press the cancel button to cancel the calibration.Note: If an RPM gauge is not available but the signal from the machine is available, perform the following procedure:
Paint a mark on the steel.
Set the RPM to a low value.
Set a timer for 60 seconds.
Count the number of times that the paint
