PROBLEM:
The position of the heater hoses at the back of the engine is not being maintained and, as a result, the hoses show wear upon delivery at dealerships. This condition pertains to the heater hose that is secured with opposing clips to the radiator hose at the back of the engine.
SOLUTION:
Shorten the heater hose at the engine block connection by 13 cm (5.1 inches) and reconfigure the hose clips to a back-to-back configuration per the following procedure.
Modification Procedure
Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam, and alkali.
At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.
Remove filler cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and radiator cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Cooling System Conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide: for tools and supplies to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations.
This procedure must only be performed on a cool engine:
Loosen the hose clamp at the hose connection at the engine block. Move the hose clamp up the hose approximately 25 cm (10 inches). Then, tighten the hose clamp enough to keep it from falling off during this modification. See Figure A.
Mark the hose at a location 13 cm (5.1 inches) from the end of the hose at the engine block connector.
Install vice grips at the locations shown to prevent excess spillage of the coolant when the hose is cut. See Figure B.
Cut the hose at the mark that is 13 cm (5.1 inches) above the hose connector. Be sure the hose clamp remains above the cut point.
After cutting the hose, remove the vice grip pliers that is closest to engine block connection. See Figure C.
Move hose back and forth approximately 3 times to loosen the hose from the hose connector.
While holding hose in your left hand, remove the section of cut hose from the hose connector with your right hand. Then, quickly place the end of the hose in your left hand on the hose connector. See Figure D.
Note: Be prepared for coolant to escape when the cut hose is removed. Reinstall the hose as quickly as possible to minimize the loss of coolant.
Slide the hose clamp down to the end of the hose and tighten the hose clamp to secure the hose to the hose connector. Torque the hose clamp to 4.5 N?m (3.3 lb.ft.). See Figure E.
