Information:
(Because of the type of information in this article, it is not written in Caterpillar Fundamental English.)
When heating and welding are used to assemble or repair components, a heat absorbing material can be applied to protect the heat sensitive area. Use of such a material can save time by eliminating excessive disassembly and assembly. It also eliminates discolorations, and oxidation caused by excessive heat, and minimizes distortion, warping and buckling of heat sensitive metals.
Heat absorbing products are designed to protect any sensitive material; including all metals, rubber, glass, plastics, paint, wood, electrical insulation, ceramics, vinyls and fabrics, from heat damage during the welding (arc and gas), flame cutting, brazing, heat treating, tempering or soldering processes. These products are non-toxic, non-flammable, non-explosive, have no odor, smoke or noxious fumes and do not stain or cause corrosion.
Any of the heat absorbing products are easy to apply. Once removed from the container, just spread it on, or build a barrier to protect the heat sensitive area. Always apply the material as close to the sensitive area as possible. A generous application will always protect better than a thin layer. For light gauge material, application on one side is normally enough to give adequate protection. For heavier gauge plate, structures or castings, apply heat absorbing material to both sides.
The safest and best method of application is to surround the work area completely. If protection is needed in only one direction, spread the material on an area 5 to 6 times as wide as the area to which heat is being applied. A layer of heat absorbing material approximately .125" (3.17 mm) thick can be used to cover a hydraulic cylinder rod or any such component which can be damaged by flying slag, sparks, spatter or metal during arc welding or when using a carbon-arc air torch.
Allow heat absorbing material to remain in place until the work area has cooled sufficiently to eliminate the possibility of damage to the surrounding parts. Remove heat absorbing material with a stick or paddle. Remember, the heat absorbing material has been absorbing heat from the work area. So even though the layer of material is cool on the surface, it will be hot down near the metal. Remove any residue with water.
For more information regarding heat absorbing material, see your local welding supply distributor.
