Location of date code.Note: If you are experiencing slow steering at low hours, check the steering valve date code to determine if this new procedure applies to the particular steering valve. The date code range for the valve is 180XXXX - 520XXXX and 011XXXX - 241XXXX.
Before performing the tightening procedure, check the steering valve date code to determine if the new procedure applies to the particular steering valve. The date code can be found on the tag that is located on the aluminum cover on the steering valve. Refer to Illustration 1. The date code number is on the RH side of the tag. To read the date code, you will need to check the first three numbers. The first two numbers correspond to the week built and the third corresponds to the year built. Date code example: if the date code is 370XXXX, the valve was built the 37th week of 2010. Likewise if the date code is 151XXXX, the valve was built the 15th week of 2011.
Remove steering control valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Control Valve - Remove".
Make sure that external surface of steering control valve is clean in order to avoid contamination of parts.

Remove the aluminum cover (B) from steering control valve (A) to access the main spool.

The pilot pressure resolver (C) may stick in the cover. This is not a problem, leave it in the cover.

Carefully remove the main spool from the housing.
Use a vice with aluminum or soft pads or cover the jaws with a shop towel to prevent damage to the spool.
Place the valve spool in a vice.

Tighten the bolt at both ends of the spool to a torque of 8 1 N m (70 9 lb in). Refer to Illustration 5 and 6.

Prior to reassembly check that all four O-rings on the aluminum cover are in place.

Check that the O-ring on the resolver valve is in place.

Check the spool for scratches and contamination before reinstalling the spool.

Carefully reinstall the spool, use a small amount of hydraulic oil to lubricate the spool. The spool must slide into the housing without resistance, do not use force. The last 3.5 mm (0.14 inch) a slight spring load may be felt.

Reinstall the aluminum cover and torque the four bolts to 8 0.5 N m (70 4.4 lb in).
Reinstall steering control valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Control Valve - Install".
