Insufficient Low Idle Speed Setting
Check the low idle speed setting. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "3406C Diesel Truck Engine".Low Fuel Pressure
Ensure that there is fuel in the fuel tank. Look for leaks or faulty bends in the fuel line between the fuel tank and the fuel transfer pump. Check for air in the fuel system. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Air In Fuel" for more information. Ensure that the fuel filters are clean. Check the fuel pressure. The fuel pressure at the outlet of the fuel transfer pump must be a minimum of 70 kPa (10 psi) at idle speed and a minimum of 170 kPa (25 psi)at full load speed. Make repairs or replace the fuel transfer pump, if necessary. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "3406C Truck Engine".Problem With Driven Equipment
Check the driveline for free movement. Disconnect the PTO drives or remove the PTO drives. Remove engine accessories and inspect engine accessories that may lock up the engine. The following components should be inspected:
Air compressor
Power steering pump
Engine oil pump
Hydraulic oil pumpProblem With The Governor
Ensure that the governor is operating properly. If a problem with the governor is suspected, refer to System Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "3406C Diesel Truck Engine".Poor Fuel Quality
Ensure that there is good, clean fuel in the tank. When possible, interview the operator in order to determine if fuel quality is in question. Try to determine if the engine started misfiring soon after refueling. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Fuel Quality".Coolant Temperature Above Normal
Check the engine coolant temperature. If the coolant temperature is above normal, refer to Troubleshooting, "Coolant Temperature Above Normal".Faulty Fuel Injector Nozzle
The fuel injection nozzles are not serviced. Remove the injectors from the engine and refer to System Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "3406C Diesel Truck Engine" for the proper testing procedure. Replace the fuel injector nozzles, as needed.Incorrect Fuel Setting
The fuel setting procedure can be performed with the governor and fuel injection pump on the engine. Refer to System Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "3406C Diesel Truck Engine" for the correct procedure.Faulty Fuel Injection Pump
Test the fuel injection pump. Refer to the Tool Operating Manual, "Install and Test Fuel Injection Pumps Used on 3406B, 3406C, and 3406 PEEC Engines Using the 4C8192 Heavy-Duty Coupling on Fiets" for the test procedure.Incorrect Fuel Injection Timing
