CHECK oil level before starting and when refueling. Some oil dipsticks are marked on both sides. One side is for checking the level with the engine stopped; the other side is for checking the level when the engine is running. Dipsticks marked on one side are usually for checking oil level with the engine stopped.Use Engine Service Classification CD (MIL-L-2104C).Change engine oil and filter(s) as specified in the Lubrication and Maintenance charts. Oil change periods should not exceed six months.CHECK (with engine stopped) fan, water pump and accessory drive belts for cracks, breaks and frayed edges. While checking belts, also check for oil, water or fuel leaks and general appearance of engine compartment.CHECK (with engine stopped) for water in the fuel.Drain a cupful of fuel from the bottom of the tank to remove water or sediment.Fill fuel tanks after completing a run. Partially filled tanks will collect moisture if the truck is parked for any length of time. Use No. 2 fuel oil or No. 2-D diesel fuel. Keep fuel clean. Consult your Authorized Dealer for fuel recommendations.CHECK coolant level (the engine should be cool and not running). Fill to the proper level with water and permanent-type anti-freeze. Adding Caterpillar Corrosion Inhibitor or equivalent to permanent-type anti-freeze is recommended if protection is for temperatures above -20°F (-29°C). Use clean water that is low in scale forming minerals, not softened water. Leave space for expansion.
