Oil groove depth of the brake discsThe oil groove depth is the most critical dimension. If the depth of the oil grooves on the brake disc is too shallow, oil flow will be inadequate. This can cause excessive wear and abrasion.An indicator pin is located on each side of the front and rear axle center housings. When the service brake disc wears, the distance between the piston and the plate decreases. This decreased distance causes the indicator pin to move closer to the flange face of the axle housing.

The value of dimension (A) can be used to determine the amount of service life that is available for the service brake disc. The baseline values for dimension (A) of the four service brakes were originally measured at the factory when the machine was new. The baseline values for dimension (A) are stored electronically on the machine's transmission electronic control module (ECM). Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to retrieve the baseline value of dimension (A). Subtract the value of dimension (A) from the baseline value.
