Information:
Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Disconnect two harnesses (1) from the gate control valve.
Remove gate control valve (2) by removing the four bolts that are located on the top of the valve.
Illustration 2 g00858298
Install 198-1869 Relief Valve (3) between the valve manifold and the pressure reducing valve. Use four 161-6154 O-Ring Seals (4) between each of the valves. Use four 198-4944 Bolts in order to assemble the valve group.
Illustration 3 g00858299
Loosen the large nuts (6) on both ends of the solenoids. Rotate the connector (5) toward the front of the machine, as shown. Tighten the two large nuts (6) on both ends of the solenoids.

(A) Port to the head end of the gate cylinders. (B) Port to the rod end of the gate cylinders. (P) Pressure Port. (T) Tank Port.. (3) 198-1869 Relief Valve .
Be sure that the hydraulic components are installed correctly. Refer to the hydraulic schematic that is shown in illustration 4. Port (A) of the 165-7276 Solenoid Valve, the 165-7277 Pressure Reducing Valve, and the 198-1869 Relief Valve should be connected to the head end of the 165-1444 Gate Cylinder. It may be necessary to switch the connections of the hydraulic hoses on the 167-4456 Combination Valve and it may be necessary to switch the electrical connections on the 165-7276 Solenoid Valve if the operations of the circuit for the gate cylinders is incorrect.
Connect the two wiring harnesses to the gate control valve.

Install a 10000 kPa (1500 psi) pressure gauge on pressure tap (7) of the vertical gate cylinder.Note: The adjustment procedure requires two people.Reference: Testing and Adjusting, RENR3031, "554 Forwarder and 554 Forwarder Hydraulic System", "Relief Valve (Gate Cylinder) - Test and Adjust - Vertical"
Turn adjustment screw (8) for the 198-1869 Relief Valve clockwise until the screw stops. Do not force the adjustment screw.
Illustration 6 g00858422
Tip down the cab. Remove panel (9) from the side of the forwarder in order to reach the adjustment screws.
Start the engine. Turn the boom switch to the ON position.
Press the toggle switch in order to fully open the grapple which will allow the implement pump to upstroke.
Illustration 7 g00858424
Continue to hold the grapple open with the toggle switch while you adjust pressure reducing valve (10) for the gate cylinders
