Problem
The 244-8593 Auxiliary Drive Gear for the high pressure fuel pump can be installed backwards on Reman and dealer rebuild engines. Dealers rebuilding C175 engines need to be careful when installing the 244-8593 Auxiliary Drive Gear on either side of the front housing. The drive gear should have a 3 mm gap between the gear it is bolted to on the right hand side, and should not be offset from the idler gear on the left hand side.

Auxiliary drive gear
(1) Thinner section of the hub that faces the high-pressure fuel pump
(2) Thicker section of the hub that faces the mating gearThe gear has a thinner hub that should face the high-pressure fuel pump. And the thicker section that is 3 0.25 mm (0.118 0.009 in) thick, should face the mating gear. Refer to Illustration 1. If the gear is installed backwards, this can cause abnormal wear to the mating gear and the high-pressure fuel pump drive bushing.Solution
There are two ways to inspect the gear orientation.
Illustration 2 g06085811
(3) 3E-2331 Plug
The first is to remove the 3E-2331 Plug from the bottom right corner of the front housing.
A flexible bore scope can be inserted through the hole and the gear orientation checked, refer to Illustration 2.

(3) 300-8569 Pulley
Illustration 4 g06085834
(5) 281-6526 Cover
If a bore scope is not available, remove the 300-8569 Pulley above the high-pressure fuel pump, refer to Illustration 3.
Also remove the 281-6526 Cover, the 259-2492 Adapter, and drive gear assembly, refer to Illustration 4. Check the gear orientation.
Illustration 5 g06085843
Correct gear orientation
(A) 3 0.25 mm (0.118 0.009 in) gap needed
Illustration 6 g06085846
Incorrect gear orientation
Illustration 5 shows the correct orientation of the gear assembly. Illustration 6 shows the incorrect orientation of the gear assembly. If the gear assembly is incorrect, schedule a repair for an engine not installed in a truck. Contact the Dealer Solution Network (DSN) if the gear assembly is incorrect and the engine is running in a truck.
