Always replace the secondary element. Do not attempt to reuse it by cleaning. Engine damage could result.
Note: Replace the secondary air filter element when you service the primary filter element for the third time. If a clean primary filter element has been installed and the filter element indicator still enters the red zone, replace the secondary air filter element. Also if the exhaust smoke remains black and a clean primary filter element has been installed, replace the secondary air filter element.

Open the left engine access door.

Loosen four cover latches (1) and remove air cleaner cover (5) from the air filter housing.Note: The latches for the air filter housing may snap open when you release the latches.
Remove primary filter element (3) and filter base (2) as one unit from the air filter housing.Note: If the primary filter element is not replaced or cleaned, do not disassemble primary filter element (3) and filter base (2) . Primary filter element (3) and filter base (2) must be installed into the air filter housing as one unit.
Clean the inside of the air filter housing with a damp cloth before secondary air filter element (4) is removed.

Secondary air filter element
Remove secondary air filter element (4) . Secondary air filter element (4) is located on the inside of the air filter housing away from the cab.Note: Do not attempt to clean the secondary air filter element. The secondary air filter element should always be replaced with a new filter element.
Install a new secondary air filter element (4) . Make sure to push secondary air filter element (4) all the way into the air filter housing.
Reinstall primary filter element (3) and filter base (2) as one unit. Do not reinstall the primary filter element without the filter base assembled over the element.Note: Assemble the primary air filter element (3) and filter base (2) together before installing into the air filter housing.ReferenceSee "Engine Air Filter Primary Element - Clean/Replace" for more information.
Clean air cleaner cover (5) and install the cover. Close latches (1) that hold air cleaner cover (5) to the air filter housing.
Close the left engine access door.
