Start By:a. remove tires and rims (See Remove Front or Rear Axle Housings)b. remove final drives Loosen the tension of the brake shoes against the brake drum by rotation of the star wheels on the wheel brake cylinders to get enough clearance to remove the wheel assembly.
Typical Example1. Remove the bolts and plate (1) from the end of the spindle.
Typical Example2. Use tool (A) and a nylon strap to fasten a hoist to the wheel assembly. 3. Pull hub (2) and the bearing cone from the wheel assembly and off the spindle. 4. Use tool group (B) and a press to push the bushing from the inside of hub (2).5. Use tool group (B) and tooling (C) to remove bearing cone (3) from the hub.
Typical Example6. Remove wheel assembly (4) from the spindle. The weight of the wheel assembly is 149 Kg (330 lb.). 7. Remove outer half of Duo-Cone seal (5) from the wheel assembly. 8. Remove washers and bolts (6). Fasten a hoist to brake drum (7) and use two 5/8"-11 NC forcing screws to loosen the drum from the wheel assembly. Remove brake drum (7) from the wheel assembly. The weight of the drum (7) is 56 Kg (125 lb.). 9. If necessary, remove bearing cups (8) from the wheel assembly.
Typical Example10. Remove bearing cone (10) and inner half of Duo-Cone seal (5) from the spindle and retainer (11).11. If necessary, remove locks, bolts and bars (9). Typical Example1. If retainer was removed, install O-ring seal on the back of the retainer. Put retainer in position on the spindle and install the bars, locks and bolts that hold it.2. Make sure the torus seals are clean and dry. Make sure all metal surfaces that make contact with the rubber torus seals are clean and dry. Use tool (A) to install the Duo-Cone seal in the retainer. Put a small amount of clean oil on the surfaces of the metal seals that make contact with each other.
Typical Example3. Install bearing cone (1) on the spindle. 4. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (2) and install them in the wheel assembly. 5. Fasten a hoist and put brake drum (3) in position on the wheel assembly. Install the washers and bolts (4) to hold the unit together. 6. Make sure rubber torus seals are clean and dry. Make sure all metal surfaces that make contact with the rubber torus seals are clean and dry. Use tool (A) to install the Duo-Cone seal in the wheel assembly. Put a small amount of clean oil on the surfaces of the metal seals that make contact with each other.
Typical Example7. Use tool (B) and a nylon strap to fasten a hoist to wheel assembly (5). Put wheel assembly (5) in position on the spindle. 8. Heat bearing cone (6) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F) and install it on
