When a grapple skidder is used, the pattern of the timber which is felled is important to the operation. The timber should be felled in a herring bone pattern (parallel lines at an angle to the skid trail).You can also group the timber along the skid trail for improved production.
On a hill, maneuver the skidder into position by driving uphill past the logs to the top of the hill. Turn the machine and work downhill. You can also turn the machine at the bottom of the hill and back up the hill into position.
On a level surface, line up the rear of end of the skidder with the logs. The end of the logs should be approximately 1 m (3 ft) from the rear of the skidder. This will ensure that the butt ends of the logs are close to the butt plate when the logs are raised.
When you assemble small groups of logs into a larger group for transport, place the first group of logs on the ground. Pick up additional groups of logs and place the logs in an "X" pattern with the first group. The center of the "X" should be approximately 1 m (3 ft) from the end of the first group of logs. Lift the load with the grapple at the center of the "X". This pattern helps prevent the logs from spreading apart during travel.
