Component Code(s) 1063SUBJECT: Possible RATAAC Fan Drive Seal Leakage
PROBLEM:
The 5P-9597 Seal that is used in the bearing block of the RATAAC fan drive motor may fail. The symptoms of a failure may be a high inlet air temperature warning due to oil contamination on the aftercooler cores, or a sudden oil mist or spray coming from the RATAAC air outlet through the top front side of the radiator guard.
SOLUTION:
The problem with the seal failing is being addressed, but until the issue can be resolved there are three procedures that can be preformed to get the most life out of the existing seal.
Adjust the Fan Drive System Pressure (ATAAC). Refer to RENR3939 for instructions.
If the serial number of the machine is AKT 1-398, perform the procedure described in the Service Letter, if the procedure has not already been performed. The Service Letter has a Product Support Program number of PS41317 and a media number of SEBE8543.
If you have a seal failure, or a repeat failure, and the procedure in PS41317 has already been performed or the serial number of the machine is AKT 399-up, check the case drain pressure and flow rates where the case drain line exits the aftercooler enclosure. With the Hydraulic tank vented, the case drain pressure should not exceed 21 kpa (3 psi) and flow rates should not exceed 1 liter per minute (0.25 gallon per minute). The pressure can be checked by installing a tee and a pressure tap with a gauge on the case drain line (2) just outside of the RATAAC enclosure at the bulkhead fitting (1). If case drain pressure or flow rates exceed the recommended values, the fan motor should be inspected and/or replaced.
Performing these procedures that are listed above will ensure the best seal life until a permanent solution is developed and implemented.
