Component Codes 3159SUBJECT: Transmission Drop Box Gear May Fail
PROBLEM:
The 8E-5052 idler gear is suspected to have been manufactured with a defect that can lead to early hour teeth breakage. There have been 4 reported field failures of broken teeth. Based on transmission build records, only machines listed as affected products are considered at risk for defective gears.
One indicator of this problem (after tooth breakage has occurred) would be large pieces of debris in the suction screen. Oil sampling will not indicate a broken tooth due to the particle sizes being too large. If teeth are going to break, it is likely to occur within the first 2000 hours of operation.
SOLUTION:
If large pieces of debris are found in the suction screen, inspect the idler gear and replace with the same part if damage is found.
If you are into the transfer gear group for some other reason, inspect the idler gear and replace with the same part if damage is found.
