The makeup valve is a check valve. The check valve will allow oil that is exiting the hydraulic fan motor to return to the motor inlet of the hydraulic motor during a reduction of flow from the pump or a complete shutdown. The makeup valve eliminates cavitation of the hydraulic motor during reduced oil flow. The supply oil comes from the hydraulic fan pump through a hose to makeup valve (2). The oil comes into the inlet of the makeup valve at connection (A). The supply oil goes through makeup valve (2) to hydraulic fan motor (1). The oil circulates through the cylinder barrel in the motor and out through makeup valve (2) at connector (C). Return oil from makeup valve (2) flows through an oil cooler. The return oil flows through a filter before returning to the hydraulic tank. The return oil from fan motor (1) can also be used as makeup oil in order to prevent a vacuum condition in the hydraulic fan motor (1). This condition happens when the fan slows and/or the fan stops.

When the hydraulic fan pump slows down, the supply of oil to the hydraulic fan motor (1) is reduced. Fan motor (1) will continue to rotate because the resistance of the air that is being pushed through the radiator is not strong enough to stop the fan blade from turning the motor. Continued rotation of the hydraulic fan motor (1) creates a vacuum in makeup valve (2). The vacuum causes a lower pressure in makeup valve (2) on the side of the oil supply. The combined force of lower pressure in passage (B) and the force of spring (3) is below than the force of the pressure of the return oil in passage (D). This causes check valve (4) to open.When check valve (4) is open, the return oil will flow back through makeup valve (2). The return oil re-enters the hydraulic motor through passage (B). This makeup oil circuit eliminates cavitation in the hydraulic fan motor.The same process occurs when the machine is shut down.
