Check the gap (D) between the generator and the flywheel housing at locations (E), (F), (G), and (H). Location (E) must always be at the top. Make a record of each measurement.If the gaps at location (G) and location (E) are less than 0.026 mm (0.001 inch) or if the gaps are greater than 0.13 mm (0.005 inch), install an equal amount of shims under each generator support.After a correction has been made to the shim thickness, tighten the support bolts of the generator to one-half of the final torque. Check the gaps at locations (E) and (G). If the gaps are less than 0.026 mm (0.001 inch) or more than 0.13 mm (0.005 inch), repeat the procedure.Check the gaps at locations (F) and (H). If the gaps at location (G) and location (E) are less than 0.026 mm (0.001 inch) or if the gaps are greater than 0.13 mm (0.005 inch), loosen the bolts in the generator supports and move the rear of the generator. If the gaps are less than 0.026 mm (0.001 inch) or more than 0.13 mm (0.005 inch), repeat the procedure.

Install a dial indicator on the base (1). Put the tip of the indicator on the generator support (2). Tighten the mounting bolt (4). If the indicator shows more than 0.13 mm (0.005 inch) of movement, the thickness of the shims is incorrect. If necessary, install shims and repeat the procedure.Electrical Measurements
Use a megohmmeter in order to measure the insulation resistance of each winding if the generator was exposed to the following conditions:
rapid changes in temperature
freezing
wet climate during shipment
wet climate during storageNote: These tests should be conducted prior to any power connections that are being made. These tests should be conducted prior to any control connections that are being made.Refer to the Generator Maintenance section of this manual in order to measure the following items:
Exciter Field (Stator)
Exciter Armature (Rotor)
Generator Field (Rotor)
Generator Armature (Stator)Protective Devices
The output to the load of the generator should always be protected with an overload protection device such as a circuit breaker or fuses. Fuses should be sized with the lowest possible current rating. However, this rating must be above the current rating for full load. A common recommendation is 115% of rated current. Determine the size of fuses or determine the size of circuit breakers in accordance with NEMA, IEC, and Local Electrical Codes. Generator Lead Connections
Generator leads are numbered according to Illustration 5. The standard diagrams and the terminal connections are shown below. Numbering is clockwise from the top and from the outside inward.
