Information:
Over or under inflated tires can cause excessive or uneven tire wear or rim damage. Check the pressure if a tire appears to be incorrectly inflated. Use dust caps to prevent possible valve damage due to dirt entering the valve stems. Have your tire dealer inspect tires with deep cuts or gouges.
Use of an inflation chuck which requires holding in place on the tire valve could result in personal injury.Use a self attaching inflation chuck and stand behind the tread when inflating a tire.
Check the inflation pressure DAILY with the tires cold and at the same outside temperature in which the machine will operate. Stand behind the tire tread and use a self attaching inflation chuck on the air line with a Caterpillar 4S6524 or 1P0545 Tire Pressure Gauge or equivalent. On machines which have liquid ballast installed in the tires, check the tire pressure with the tire valve at its highest point to prevent loss of ballast. The ballast must be maintained at the correct level in each tire. Failure to do so will result in a reduction in machine stability. See the topic "Tire Ballast (if equipped)".
When inflating tires in a heated area, make allowances in pressure change for cold, outside temperatures. See the Cold Weather Operation and Maintenance Manual Form SEBU5898.
Foam filling the tires can lead to damage which will void the machine warranty and is therefore not recommended by Caterpillar.
For more information regarding types of tire and inflation pressures contact your Caterpillar dealer.
It is permissable to install liquid sealant in the tires of all models but the all up machine weight must not be exceeded. This will invalidate warranty and certification of certain components and structures.
Tire Ballast (if equipped)
Liquid ballast is installed in the tires of certain machines. Failure to use correctly ballasted tires on these machines could result in reduced machine stability which could result in injury or death. Ensure you are familiar with the machine requirement. The weight of ballast specified must not be exceeded. Machines which require ballast in the tires have an instruction located with the load tables on the dashpanel.
Liquid ballast for tires consists of a mixture of water and calcium chloride (CaCl). The CaCl is an anti freeze additive. If a tire is repaired or replaced the correct quantity and mix of CaCl and water must be installed before the machine is put back to work. Machine stability will be adversely affected if the correct ballast is not installed.Check the inflation pressure DAILY with the tires cold and at the same outside temperature in which the machine will operate. Use a Caterpillar 4S6524 or 1P0545 Tire Pressure Gauge or equivalent and position the wheel being checked with the tire valve at its highest point. The liquid ballast is corrosive and the air gauge should be rinsed with clean water after use.The tire ballast mix when shipped from the factory will give anti freeze protection to - 30° C (- 22° F). unless special requirements are defined.
