The D350E Series II and D400E Series II machines have two oil compartments in one tank. The front compartment contains oil for the brake cooling system and for the hoist system. The rear compartment contains oil for the brake operation system and for the steering system.
These machines transfer oil between the front and rear compartments during normal operation. It is therefore important, that the same oil (TDTO, TO-4) is used in both the front and rear compartments.
To help ensure design performance of Caterpillar wet brake systems, Caterpillar recommends oils that meet the Caterpillar TO-4 specification. Oils that meet the Caterpillar TO-4 specification must be used in the Articulated Truck Brake System, Steering System and Hoist System.
All machines are factory filled with oils that meet this specification. Ensure that the correct oil is used during top up or re-fill of these compartments.
A revision to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7064, is due to be published in November. The revision will include this information and a warm-up procedure.
