Caterpillar ProductsAny time a machine is not to be operated for a period of more than 30 days, correct preparation of the machine for storage is very important. When a machine is not operated during an extended period of time, moisture condensation (drops of water) in the fuel tank and other compartments, and on metal surfaces that do not have paint (like linkage pins, clevises, adjustment screws, springs etc.) can cause rust and corrosion or other damage. The cost for repair or replacement of damaged parts can generally be prevented by correct machine preparation when storage becomes necessary.
Correct procedures to follow during preparation of Caterpillar machines for storage are available in Special Instruction Form SEHS7864, "Storage Procedures For Caterpillar Equipment". In addition, a Special Instruction Form SEHS7392 "Storage Procedures For Caterpillar Engines, Generators And Marine Transmissions" and an Operation, Lubrication and Maintenance Guide "Cold Weather Operation", Form SEBU5338-02, can be used as references. The use of information and procedures given in these instructions will permit good protection of the machine from possible damage during extended periods of storage.
