Introduction
This Special Instruction will provide the procedure required to inspect and replace the tailgate chains on the machines listed above.Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.Prepare the Machine
Park the machine on a hard, level surface and, referring to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, apply the parking brake, stop the engine, and turn the battery disconnect switch to the "off" position.
Clean and inspect the tailgate chains on both sides of the body.
Count the number of chain links in each chain.Inspection and Replacement Procedure

Inspection Area for Wear
Inspect the chain (B) which is connected between the links (A).

If any wear is found on the outside of the links facing the tire, measure the diameter of the links.
Replace the old chain with new chain, if the diameters of the links are less than 12.2 mm (0.48 inch). Refer to Table 1.
Remove one link from the chain at one end, if the chain links do not show signs of wear and/or have a diameter of the links are equal to or greater than 12.2 mm (0.48 inch).
Reattach the chains to the attachment links and tighten the bolts.Note: Link bolts should not be torque tightened. Tighten the bolt to achieve minimum clearance to allow the link to rotate freely.
