TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN May 11, 2005
Track-Type Tractors D11R (AAF1-Up), (7PZ1-Up), (9XR1-Up), (9TR1-Up)
Component Code(s) 4101, 4122SUBJECT: Erratic or Hesitant Steering Clutch Engagement
PROBLEM:
There have been reports of intermittent steering problems in D11R steering clutches. The problem has been described as erratic or hesitant clutch engagement where after releasing the clutch finger-tip control, the clutch pressure recovery is slow (5 to 15 seconds) and the clutch does not re-engage, which causes steering problems.
SOLUTION:
To troubleshoot these symptoms on a machine, verify through ET that the clutch solenoid is being energized electronically. If the symptoms are being seen on just one side of the machine, you may try swapping clutch solenoids from left to right and vice versa. If the problem appears to remain with a particular steering clutch and brake module, verify clutch pressure, or lack thereof, at the steering clutch module test ports.
If these tests indicate a leak within the steering clutch and brake module, remove the steering module and remove the clutch piston. Grind four grooves, 19 mm long X 9.7 mm wide X 2 mm deep, using an SC300 rotary burr, or similar, in the 121-0679 clutch piston. The new slots may be aligned with the slots located on the ID of the piston for ease of location.
Note: If leakage still exists after the above process has been used, contact your dealer Technical Communicator to create a Service Request for entry into the Dealer Solution Network.
