The designated person will determine if the conditions that are found are a hazard. The designated person will determine if a more detailed inspection is required.
Inspect the hook for any distortion such as bends in the hook or twists in the hook.
Inspect the dimensions of the throat (D) of type III hook. An increase in the dimensions of the throat must not exceed 5% of the original dimensions of the throat. Refer to illustration 1 and table 1 for the dimensions of the throat.
Inspect the hook for wear. An increase in the nominal dimensions (B), (H), and (L1) of the type III hook must not exceed 10% of the original nominal dimensions of the hook. Refer to illustration 1 and table 1 for the nominal dimensions of the hook.
Inspect the hook for cracks, nicks, or gouges.
Ensure that the latch properly engages. Inspect the latch for any damage. Ensure that the latch is not malfunctioning. Note: Before continuing to operate the hook, the hook must be repaired or replaced if any of the above conditions exist. Refer to illustration 2 and table 2 for weld information. Contact your Cat dealer for additional information on replacing the lifting hook.
