Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Apply oil to all of the bearings before assembly. 1. Use the proper equipment to handle the bearing. Lower the temperature of the bearing. Use Tooling (A) to install the bearing in spider assembly (1), as shown. 2. Install spider assembly (1) on the housing and install the bolts that hold it. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 110 5 N m (80 4 lb ft). 3. Install bearing races (3) and bearing (2) on the spider assembly. 4. Install spiral lockring (4) in hub (5). 5. Install turbine (6) on hub (5), then install bolt retainer (7) on the hub. Install bolts on opposite side of the hub. Tighten these bolts to a torque of 50 3 N m (37 2 lb ft). 6. Install the turbine and the hub assembly in the housing. Check the clearance between the hub and the bearing in the spider assembly. The clearance across the diameter must be 0.114 0.051 mm (.0045 .0020 inch). 7. Check the clearance between the turbine and the torque converter housing. The clearance dimension (U) across the diameter must be 2.67 0.38 mm (.105 .015 inch). The maximum permissible clearance across the diameter must not be more than 4.001 mm (.1575 inch). 8. Install bearing races (9) and bearing (8) on the hub. 9. Use Tooling (A) to install the bearing in carrier (10). Install the bearing so it is even with the counterbore in the carrier. 10. Install stator (12) on the carrier. Install retainer ring (11) in the stator. 11. Install the stator and carrier assembly (13) in the converter housing. Check the clearance between the hub and the bearing in the carrier assembly. The clearance across the diameter must be 0.112 0.051 mm (.0044 .0020 inch). 12. Check the clearance between the stator and the turbine. The clearance, dimension (V) across the diameter must be 0.81 0.10 mm (.032 .004 inch). The maximum permissible clearance across the diameter is 1.22 mm (.048 inch). 13. Install bearing races (15) and bearing (14) on the carrier assembly. 14. Put impeller (16) and hub (17) in position on the flange assembly. Install the bolts that hold the hub and the impeller to the flange assembly. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 50 3 N m (37 2 lb ft). 15. Check the clearance between the impeller and the stator. The clearance, dimension (X) across the diameter must be 0.81 0.10 mm (.032 .004 inch). The maximum permissible clearance across the diameter is 1.22 mm (.048 inch). 16.
