1600 and 1800 Frame Main Rotor Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the generator. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Generator - Remove".
For generators that possess a PMG and a PMG stator, the PMG and PMG stator must be removed before the exciter stator or the exciter rotor. Refer to the "Exciter Remove and Install" section for information about removing the PMG components.
Remove the exciter stator and the exciter rotor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exciter Remove and Install". The information that is in the following procedure is applicable for both single bearing and double bearing generators, except for the minor difference where noted. The information that is in the following procedure does not discuss the removal of the drive hub. The rotor, the drive end bearing bracket that is on the two bearing generator, the bearings, and the fan are removed as a single unit.
The rotor must be removed in the horizontal position.
During removal of the generator, the rotor assembly must not contact the stator assembly. If the rotor assembly contacts the stator assembly, the windings can be damaged.
High density plastic strips may need to be placed between the main stator and the main rotor in order to protect the components when the generator is disassembled from the engine. Damage may occur to the components upon disassembly if the rotor is allowed to drop against the stator.
The minimum length of the protective strips must be the length of the main rotor. The protective strips must be the correct thickness in order to allow support of the rotor during the removal of the generator end bracket and in order to allow support of the rotor after the generator end bracket has been removed. Ensure that the strips are directly under to rotor poles heads. The protective strips will assist in maintaining rotor alignment with the generator end bracket, in order to allow the housing to be removed.

Attach a suitable lifting device (1) to the drive end bearing bracket on the two bearing generators, or to the rotor hub on the single bearing generators. The lifting device must be used in order to support the generator rotor. Note: The lifting device must be able to safely lift the entire rotor assembly. The rotor assembly weights 1370 kg (3020 lb) to 2041 kg (4500 lb).Note: On two bearing generators, make an alignment mark on the front bearing bracket and the stator. The alignment mark will allow you to install the front bearing bracket back to the original position.

Install the protective strips (2) that are discussed in two of the "Notice" paragraphs at the beginning of this section. The protective strips are placed between the main rotor and main stator.
