Walk-Around Inspection
For maximum service life of the machine, make a thorough walk-around inspection before mounting the tractor or starting the engine.Look around and under the machine for items such as loose or missing bolts, trash build-up, oil, coolant or fuel leaks. Inspect the condition and inflation of tires.Remove any trash and debris. Adjust tire inflation as needed. Have any necessary repairs made, loose connections and parts tightened to their specified torques and any missing parts replaced before starting the engine or operating the machine.Refer to "Walk-Around Inspection" in the "Maintenance Section" for detailed walk-around inspection information.Machine Pre-Start Checks
Check all of the oil, coolant and fuel levels.Testing the Supplemental Steering System
The Supplemental Steering System has a supplemental steering pump driven by a 24 volt D.C. motor. It also has an automatic control system that turns the motor on when the flow of oil from the main steering pump stops. The Supplemental Steering System can also be manually activated. The Supplemental Steering System will be automatically activated by the control system if any of the following occur:A. Steering pump failure.B. Steering system oil level falls below the steering pump suction line.C. Engine stalls during operation. The Supplemental Steering System is intended to provide steering for the machine only long enough to bring it to a stop. When the Supplemental Steering System is activated, the machine must be brought to a stop. The problem must be corrected before operation is continued.
To minimize battery drain, leave the switch in MANUAL only long enough to test the supplemental steering.
Test the supplemental steering daily or at the beginning of each shift. To Test:
1. Stop the engine, leave the disconnect switch on. Move the supplemental steering switch (1) up to MANUAL.2. The supplemental steering indicator (2) will come on and the steering motor will operate. 3. Turn the steering wheel full right and full left. The effort required to steer the machine should be nearly the same as the effort required when using the machine's primary steering system.4. Move the supplemental steering switch to the AUTO position.5. If the supplemental steering system did not function properly, contact your Caterpillar dealer. When the disconnect switch is turned on and the engine start switch is on, the supplemental steering system will activate briefly.Refer to the "Every 10 Service Hours or Daily" in the "Maintenance Section" for more detailed information.Engine Diagnostic System
The diagnostic switch is located in the switch panel above the visor. To Test the System
Depress the diagnostic switch. The check engine light will come on and emit a series of flashes. The first series of flashes, indicate the first digit of the diagnostic code. After a brief pause, a second series of flashes are pulsed. The sum of these pulses represent the second digit of the diagnostic code. If the system is functioning properly, the check engine indicator will come on and stay on for approximately 5 seconds, then go out. If the indicator comes on and stays on during operation, the engine control system has detected a system problem. For
