While you rotate pinion shaft (27), tighten nut (11) in order to achieve a preload rolling torque of 1.2 to 3.4 N m (10.6 to 30 lb in). This torque value is the torque that is needed in order to rotate pinion (27). Make sure that there is zero end play of pinion shaft (27).Note: Reduce preload rolling torque to 0.6 to 1.7 N m (5.3 to 15 lb in) for used roller bearings with more than 100 hours of operation.
If the preload rolling torque for the pinion exceeds the specifications, back off nut (11) by 1/8 turn. Reseat bearing cone (9) and washer (10) against nut (11). Perform Step 6 again.

Stake Nut and Tooling
When the torque for rotating pinion (27) is correct, stake nut (11) by peening the collar into the slot in the pinion shaft. Proper peening requires the use of a punch with a spherical nose. The punch should have a nose that is (C) diameter. The punch should be held at an angle (B). The desired result is a stake of minimum length (D) and minimum depth (E). Secure carrier housing (25) in a holding fixture.
Install the pinion subassembly in carrier housing (25) with 80 percent of a new shim pack (26). Make sure that the axle centerline is vertical and that the teeth of bevel gear are facing upward, as shown.
Tighten bolts in each bearing cap to a torque of 25 N m (18 lb ft).
Move adjusting nut (31) and (35) to a position that maintains the gear backlash and a slight bearing end play, but not a tight gear mesh.
Reposition the differential assembly so that the pinion shaft is vertical and the gear end is downward.
Measure the torque for rotating pinion (27) and record the measured torque.
Move adjusting nut (31) to the zero backlash position. Back off adjusting nut (31) by one-half turn.
Move adjusting nut (31) while you rotate pinion (27). Monitor the torque that is required to rotate pinion (27) until the torque is greater than the torque that was measured in Step 14. This is the seated position.
Move adjusting nut (35) until the torque for rotating pinion (27) is 4.5 to 6.8 N m (40 to 60 lb in).
Measure the backlash between bevel gear (24) and pinion gear (27). Measure the backlash at three equally spaced positions around the bevel gear. The backlash must be 0.36 0.12 mm (.014 0.005 inch).
