During the initial break-in period, a growl or chatter noise may be detected when the machine is placed under load or while making turns. The noise is caused by a "stick and slip" condition that occurs when the bushings are burnished or polished against the mating parts. As a result of this initial wear, higher than normal aluminum and copper particles will be suspended in the final drive train oil.
The same final drive design is also used in several models of wheel loaders which exhibit similar symptoms. However, it is more noticeable in skidders due to the loading effect of the no-spin differentials versus an "open" differential.
If the noise is objectionable, it is recommended that 1U9891 Hydraulic Oil Additive be used in the final drives during the break-in period. One container of the additive should be divided between the four final drives on the machine. The noise will usually subside after the first 150 hours of operation. After the first final drive oil change, copper and aluminum levels should more closely follow the values listed in the S O S wear profiles for these models. It is not necessary to use the additive in future final drive oil changes.
This information also applies to all earlier machines which may have been updated to the new design. Do NOT add 1U9891 Hydraulic Oil Additive to machines which use gear oil for cooling and lubricating the disc brakes.
