(9) Destroke pistonThe fan drive pump is an axial piston pump. Pump output is controlled by a compensator valve. The compensator valve senses both pressure requirements and flow requirements for the system. The pump provides the high-pressure oil for the fan drive system. The pump is also the primary source for pilot oil. The pump is mounted to the end of the steering pump. While the engine is running, drive shaft (1) turns. Drive shaft (1) causes cylinder barrel (7) to turn. Pistons (8) are held against swash plate (3) by retaining plate (5). Swash plate (3) does not rotate. At the maximum swash plate angle, some of pistons (8) are pulled out of cylinder barrel (7). At the same time, some of the pistons are pushed into the cylinder barrel. The rotation of the cylinder barrel causes the pistons to move into the cylinder barrel and out of the cylinder barrel. As a piston moves out of the barrel, the piston draws oil into the pump. As a piston moves back into the barrel, the piston forces the oil out of the pump. The angle of swash plate (3) regulates the amount of oil that is drawn into the barrel of each piston per each revolution of the drive shaft. The angle of swash plate (3) also regulates the amount of oil that is drawn out of the barrel of each piston. As engine rpm changes, swash plate (3) angle fluctuates between neutral and the maximum angle. As swash plate (3) moves toward the maximum angle, more oil is drawn into the pump and more oil is discharged from the pump. The compensator valve keeps the pump pressure at an appropriate level necessary to fulfill the load requirements and the flow requirements. The load requirements and the flow requirements maintain the fan at full rpm. The compensator valve contains two control pistons which continually adjust the angle of swash plate (3).Upstroke piston (4) causes swash plate (3) to upstroke the pump. Spring (6) moves swash plate (3) to the maximum angle, and increases the pump output.Destroke piston (9) causes swash plate (3) to destroke the pump. The oil acts against destroke piston (9). The oil moves the piston. The oil changes the pump displacement by regulating the angle of swash plate (3).When oil flows into destroke piston (9) the force of spring (6) is overcome. Swash plate (3) moves toward the minimum angle until equilibrium is reached between the pressure in destroke piston (9) and force of spring (6).Pump outlet pressure is maintained by pressure control spool (13).Reference: For the specifications of the fan drive pump, refer to the Service Manual module Specifications, "Piston Pump (Hydraulic Fan)" for the machine that is being serviced.
